The Personal Brand That Will Close Deals - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Im 26 years old no longer the youngest guy in the room in Silicon Valley.  I feel my age is an advantage though; sure, it doesnt get me the 18-year-old with a start-up press, but investors, potential hires, and my current team take me more seriously because Im older. But its a whole different story when I attend conferences and  trade-shows  for the restaurant franchise industry.  At 26, not only am I the youngest guy in the room, but the median age runs somewhere around 42.  Because I need to close deals with these professionals, my age can at time become a disadvantage with these target clients. Nevertheless, I have closed deals with some of the largest brands in the US. What age-barrier? The following are my techniques to overcome the age-barrier and close deals with professionals that are twice my age. Embrace your age/look for the advantage When Im meeting with 50 year old professionals, I dont try  to hold a conversation about opening a restaurant franchise that just isnt my area of expertise.  I therefore look to steer the conversation towards a topic that I am an expert in new technology. Ive learned that professionals outside of Silicon Valley are completely fascinated about Silicon Valley.  I take control of the conversation from the very beginning by telling professionals about all the new start-ups that they can expect to play with soon.  Stories like Instagrams $1 billion acquisition are also fun to talk about. Best approach: humble confidence No one likes arrogance.  Sure, I understand the appeal of arrogance because it makes you look like a no-nonsense kind of guy who is looking to make business deals.  But when youre the young guy, arrogance is a big turn off. Instead, go with the humble confidence approach.  You are an expert in your field, and are looking to share this expertise with others; at the same time, you understand that the people youre meeting with are experts in their own fields and youre looking to learn from them. People want to do business with a winner 1. Dress the part: the obvious is business professional attire.  Nowadays, I have upped my dress with a nice watch, clean shoes, and a fake-leather laptop bag.  A professional with a nice watch indirectly signals that hes successful with his business.  If you are successful with your business, then your potential target will feel that they will be successful with you as well. 2. Hand-out materials: I used to make presentations with a keynote presentation, then email the presentation to my potential clients afterwards.  I have found my presentation is much more effective when I have printed material to hand out at the end of my presentation.  Professionals are busy and like to procrastinate when possible.  Printed materials sitting on their desk are a constant reminder of your presentation, which can increase the decision-making process. 3. A killer presentation: I love to wing my presentation.  Im a capable public speaker to begin with, and I know my product better than anyone else Ive therefore been able to close deals by walking into meetings and simply presenting with no actual preset plan. However, Ive recently started to fully prepare for my presentations a whole 2 days ahead of time and also make a custom slide deck just for the potential client.  And Ive noticed a HUGE difference in my ability to close deals. Because I practice ahead of time, my presentation is more direct, better put together, and there are less ums and tangents during the meeting.  Im able to better control the pace of the meeting and direct it in the direction that I want. Even if youre a spectacular public speaker and you know your product very well, I encourage you to prepare for your pitches at least 2 days ahead of time.  I promise that your close rates will greatly increase. Relaxing into What Is - Why Its Essential This month, I am endeavoring to crystallize the important key findings that are emerging from my interviews (47 conducted to date) with women nationwide who have overcome professional crisis and transformed their lives and work (the study is Women Overcoming Professional Crisis: Finding New Meaning in Life and Work, co-sponsored by The Esteemed Woman Foundation). These interviews have been so inspiring, and have deeply expanded my love and admiration of women the world over. It has become even clearer to me all the many ways women strive to expand their lives, and to support and improve the life experiences of others. This week, Laurie, a dear friend and colleague, was reviewing my research findings. In doing so, she shared with me a process that she has found to be essential in thriving through change. Her words were very meaningful (and true!) for me, so I’d like to share them with you. Laurie shared: “I have discovered that it is critical to trust that the circumstances in which you find yourself are exactly where you are meant to be. It seems that this experience [of embracing fully where you are] is precisely the catalyst for change. There is tremendous power in not resisting where you are, and in relaxing and being ok with not knowing what your next move will be, or where it may take you. Often in the midst of desperately wanting to make a change, it is very challenging to create a list of meaningful goals, objectives, etc., especially when you really don’t know where to “go from here.” My personal discovery was that when I didn’t think too hard, and just let it go and trusted that the universe would help me to see, I was in a far more liberating space. There is great power in rewarding yourself for not knowing what’s next. This experience of not knowing perhaps might even be one of our goals. This open space allowed me to continue to “talk out loud” until I led myself to the path that was right for me. If I tried too hard to make a change it never came to fruition, because it wasn’t from my heart.”______________________________________ What helpful advice Laurie gives. I, along with Laurie and many others, have found there is great positive energy and power in being OK with the present, even (especially) in the chaos. This not knowing state represents that we are willing to fly by the seat of our pants, be authentic in our words and actions, process our experience fully, and firmly trust in ourselves and in the creative power we share and hold. I would add that when we move too quickly to reduce our own discomfort of the moment, we often bring about our own suffering, and our actions misfire. I have lived this experience quite a few times in the past. Now, when I am deeply uncomfortable or worried, I allow myself to feel it fully. I DO NOT take concrete action until I feel more able to move forward from a sense of balance, acceptance, and understanding of what is. Both Laurie and I agree that being OK with not seeing the next step requires daily practice. The wonderful news is that the more we practice, the easier it is to own it and when necessary, realign and correct our path and our thinking, so that it continually comes from the heart and from a rock-solid belief that there is an ultimate perfection to all of it. Danielle LaPorte is my Cult Leader OK, not really. OK, kinda. OK, enough that my husband calls Danielle my cult leader, was worried that I wasnt kidding when I joked that attending her Group Firestarter in NYC last Sept led me to shaving my head vowing to only eat oregano.
